Hosts of the Mythinformed podcast, Brian Edward and Dmitry K talk with Thomas Smith and Eli about Mythcon IV. Many points that have been brought up on "both sides" after Mythcon IV took place. We try our best to speak to two of the critics of the conference in this interview.
We lost $12k on #Mythcon 2017 and are raising money to support the cost of #Mythcon 2018.
We cannot stop talking about, listening to and challenging ideas and issues that are important to us. We will not find progress talking only to those who agree with us. We need to explore beyond our comfort zone, ask difficult questions, criticize ideas and try to find common ground in order to work on conflict resolution.
In 2017, we received major social media backlash due to our inclusion of YouTubers Sargon of Akkad , Armoured Skeptic and Shoe0nHead - which caused our 100% volunteer-run, nonprofit conference to LOSE funds. For example:
- We were petitioned to de-platform our speakers.
- Our venue received messages saying we were attracting a white supremacist crowd - forcing us to pay for additional security.
- Our hotel received harassing calls and emails.
- Speakers and special guests backed out weeks before the conference with non-refundable airfare.
- Members of our own team were threatened with doxxing.
#MythCon, put on by Mythicist Milwaukee, gives participants and speakers a chance to share and discuss a wide spectrum of ideas among those with differing viewpoints and beliefs. By inviting speakers from outside of our typical atheist circle, MythCon’s crowd of more than 560 people possessed a more diverse set of viewpoints and discussion topics than ever before.
Mythicist Milwaukee is a secular organization that promotes dialogue about religion, culture and freedom of thought. We adopt principals on free expression, with the understanding that Mythicist Milwaukee will not inhibit debate or de-platform speakers based on ideas. As an organization, it is not our place to pass judgments on ideas. It is up to our community to make those judgments for themselves - and to challenge and participate in discussion and debate surrounding ideas they disagree with.
We believe that reasoned debate and discussion can help to de-escalate tensions in light of the current
sociopolitical climate, and to create understanding among differing religious views. We hope to continue our efforts in 2018 and beyond.
Thank you to those who continue to support us in our efforts! The full video is up here:
We had the honor of interviewing Tim Urban on the Mythinformed podcast. Wait But Why is a site founded by Tim Urban and Andrew Finn and written and illustrated by Tim Urban. The site covers a range of subjects as a long-form blog. Content has been syndicated on The Huffington Post, Lifehacker, as well as being referenced on other sites. Typical posts involve long form explanations of various topics, including artificial intelligence, outer space, and procrastination using a combination of prose and rough illustrations.
In June 2015, Elon Musk asked Urban if he would be willing to write about his companies and their surrounding industries, leading to a four-part series of Wait But Why posts on Elon Musk and his companies. Urban interviewed Musk multiple times, and the two discussed the importance of sustainable transport, solar energy, and the future of space exploration. On April 20, 2017, Tim Urban posted the first deep insight into Elon Musk's transhumanist brain-machine interface company, Neuralink. Musk had asked Urban to write an explanatory article about a month and a half before.

Seamus and John from the Free Thought podcast joins us for part two of our conversation on religion, politics and entertainment. Part one of our conversation can be heard on their channel. We delve into many topics that surround secularism and the separation of church and state. We discuss the importance of entertainers and how main stream media can help promote normalizing Atheism.
Seamus is a former law enforcement officer turned atheist activist. He grew up as a believer in Christianity and became a member of the Church of Christ. After having a moment of clarity (which involved having to be medically revived from death), Seamus found his way to reason and a secular view of the world. He then created his own podcast to promote free thought and positive atheism known as ‘The Free Thought Prophet.’ Seamus is also a member of Secular Student Alliance. He has a BA in Criminology with a minor in Psychology, a musician and is a proud single father.
John Hamill grew up in Belfast but now lives south of the Border in the Republic of Ireland, with his wife and four children. He is currently a member of the National Executive at Atheist Ireland and he has previously served as Secretary of Atheist Alliance International. His work at Atheist Ireland has included a number of campaigns, including bringing to an end the practice of Irish universities in awarding without tender, millions of €uros in public money annually to the Roman Catholic Church for chaplaincy services. He also participated in the first ever formal meeting between the sitting Irish Prime Minister and an atheist advocacy group.
